Gorakshep is another village in the Khumbu region which is at the elevation of 5164 m. Previously the 1st everest base camp is now the last rest area for trekkers trekking from Lukla to Everest base camp. Since the permits of trekkers trekking to Everest base camp forbids them to accommodate in Everest base camp itself, travellers stay in Gorak Shep and do a short hike of 2-3 hours to base camp the next day.
The accommodation in Gorak Shep is very basic and recently they have made modern amenities like high speed internet available. Trekkers often do an early morning hike of around 3 hours to Kala Patthar; a vantage point to view Everest and the surrounding mountains.
From Gorak Shep itself you can see beautiful views of Nuptse, Pumori, Lingtring, Khumbutse, Lola and many others. This is the junction of Kala Patthar and Everest base camp. There is a crisis of water in Gorak Shep which is why it is advised to stack bottled water from Labuche.
